Shih Tzu are wonderful companion pets and generally always adjust quite well. In the case of a puppy being re-homed - it is new to the world and is in the stage of life to be trained, while an adult is already use to a certain routine, family, etc. and such a change of family and environment may require some loving patience. It's important to do everything possible to put/keep an adult Shih Tzu at ease during the transitional period. Introducing it to any existing pets should be taken slow. Giving them lots of loving reassurance while they are adjusting to their new home is of great importance. I will always advise as best possible of their personality and the routine they are accustom to. One thing is, none of my dogs are kept in crates, and since they aren't use to that, they may wouldn't do well with being crated. When you must leave them at home while you are out, I recommend to keep them in an exercise pen or either a laundry room, bathroom, etc. With your loving patience and reassurance the transition shouldn't be very difficult.
