Mixed Breeds (aka Designer dogs):
There has been a big move on the last several years over mixed breeds. I think if people interested in a nice pet understood the whole picture they would think twice before purchasing a mixed breed. One needs to understand that purebred dogs are bred to possess particular traits (described in each individual breeds "breed standard") thus the different groups such as working, hunting, toy, and so on. It is true that many breeds that we have today are the result of crossing different breeds to eventually form a new breed. There is nothing wrong with such an undertaking, but one should realize that this process takes many years over several generations of breeding select dogs to one another to come to a uniform result (breed). In the fast pace world we live in now days, not many have the time, patience and dedication to see such a labor through. Anyone can let one breed of dog mate to another breed of dog and have puppies. To do so is dishonoring both breeds and the intent for which they were created. Such a breeding will not produce any kind of consistency or predictability in temperament, health, or appearance. The results may well be from A-Z because such a breeding will not breed true. I recommend one search out the right purebred dog for their family and live style (be it Shih Tzu or another breed) and when decided on the right breed seek out a responsible breeder of the same; one that loves and is dedicated to the perpetuation of it.
